Wasps

Wasps become a serious nuisance for home residents and business owners alike when they build a nest and begin to display aggressive behaviour.

It may seem like a good idea to take on the removal of a wasps nest but this is dangerous. It is highly recommended to call a professional pest control company. You may even be allergic without even knowing it, seek urgent medical advice if you are stung and feel unwell.

It is best to try and take action as soon as you suspect you may have a wasp nest problem before the nest can get too large.

Wasp Nest Prevention Tips

Wasps nests locations are not located randomly but are actually carefully considered by the queen wasp. The first thing the queen wasp looks for is shelter from rain and dampness. They look for a dark secluded area where they will not be interfered with.

  • Treat Dead wood with wasp repellent - Wasps use dead wood and saliva to create the wasp hive, either ensure that they donโ€™t have access to dead wood or treat the available dead wood.
  • Check for holes and gaps in sheds or buildings - This allows wasps entry to the building, so ensure these holes and gaps are sealed accordingly.
  • Add light - Wasps do not like light, if there is an area inside a building that is prone to/ vulnerable to wasp, adding a low wattage light will deter them.
  • Regular Inspections - Finding a wasp hive smaller than a tennis ball is something you may be able to take care of yourself, however any bigger and you will have to start calling in Pest Control services. Regular inspections mean early detection and easier removal.
  • Fill holes in the ground - Holes in the ground may occur from rodents, construction work etc. Itโ€™s important to fill these holes in order to discourage nest building.

Lone Wasp Prevention Tips

Wasps travel far from their nest in search of food, water and nest building material, so you may have a high volume of wasps in your home and garden without having a nest in the nearby vicinity. If you want to reduce the amount of free flying wasps around you, follow these simple steps:

  • Ensure bins are fully sealed. Wasps will search for holes or lids that donโ€™t fit properly. Also keep bins a good distance from your home.
  • When possible, keep windows and doors shut to prevent the wasps entrance into the home.
  • Wasps are attracted to nectar and sap from sweet smelling plants. If you are planting these plants, ensure they are not close to windows and doors.
  • Wasp traps are available in a variety of stores or can easily be bought online. Take care when placing these.
  • Homemade wasp attractors can be made and placed away from the home, This will deter them from coming into to your home.
